Tenure-track Faculty Position in Art and Science of Animation

The School of Design at Université Laval is inviting applications for a professor position within its programs in art and science of animation (BASA/CASA). Located in the heart of the Saint-Roch district in Québec City, the School offers an inspiring learning environment in constant interaction with a dynamic network of animation studios (2D/3D), visual effects companies, independent animation filmmakers as well as artist-run centers and galleries. The bachelor’s program in art and science of animation (BASA) provides solid training focused on the various components of animated creation, from project management to the social impact of animation, alongside ongoing technological monitoring, enabling students to design substantial creative productions.
Job Description
Required Profile
The position is open to theorists, creators and individuals engaged in research-creation, whether in the animation industry or in independent animation.
Teaching and research
The candidate will be expected to assume the following academic responsibilities:
- Teaching at all three university cycles (undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels);
- Innovative research, creation and/or research-creation, leading to publications and/or experimentations or productions publicly disseminated within recognized professional networks;
- Supervision of graduate students;
- Active participation in program development, in the administrative life of the School of Design and in activities reflecting the professor’s social engagement.
Requirements
The requirements are as follows:
- Ph.D. relevant to the field of animation or related discipline;
- Exceptionally, a master’s degree combined with a sustained professional practice of at least 8 years, peer-recognized and accompanied by international visibility may be considered by the selection committee;
- Demonstrate excellent research record and/or exemplary practice (prizes, grants, distinctions, publications or independent productions);
- University teaching experience (theoretical and/or practical);
- Proficiency in written and spoken French (the University offers training, if needed, to enhance this knowledge).

- Ability to secure external research, creation or research-creation funding and to develop grant-based partnerships;
- Strong interest in the societal and technological issues of animation (for example, and without being limited to: generative artificial intelligence, ethical issues in animated production, inclusion and diversity of representations, narrative innovation and new forms of dissemination);
- Vision aligned with the orientations and values of the program;
- Ability to collaborate with professional sectors, animation studios and the industry.
