Thanks to the Department of Wood and Forest Sciences of the Faculty of Forestry, Geography and Geomatics, Université Laval is the only university in Quebec to offer undergraduate programs in forestry and wood engineering leading to the Order of Forest Engineers of Quebec or to the Order of Engineers of Quebec. The Department of Wood and Forest Sciences is also responsible for the multi-faculty integrated bachelor's degree in natural and managed environments. It has 35 full-time professors or lecturers, five Research Chairs, three Teaching Leadership Chairs, a research consortium, two research centers and over 500 undergraduate and graduate students. Collaborations with the departments of geography and geomatics, as well as with other faculties at the university, offer interesting opportunities for multidisciplinary research.

Job Description

In accordance with its development plan, the Department of Wood and Forest Sciences is looking for a professor in urban forestry whose teaching and research activities will be developed within the framework of the Chair in Urban Trees and their Environment 2020-2025, which he or she will hold. The person recruited will also be responsible for supporting the bachelor's degree program in forest management and environment and the integrated bachelor's degree in natural and managed environments. More specifically, teaching and research activities will be in areas related to urban forestry such as:

  1. The study of the relationship between trees and their environment in urban areas, including soils and the ecophysiology and development of their root systems;
  2. The planning, management and protection of the urban canopy, including urban woodlots;
  3. The consideration of trees in the planning and design of urban projects;
  4. The study and estimation of ecological and socio-economic services provided by urban forests;
  5. The impact of environmental stresses on the defense capacity of urban trees against insect pests and disease agents.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Teaching in urban forestry and related fields at the undergraduate and graduate levels;
  2. Development of new teaching methods or materials;
  3. Secure research funding from external granting agencies and partners to support their research;
  4. Conduct research and supervise graduate students on topics related to the above areas;
  5. Participate in departmental, faculty, university and multi-stakeholder (private and public sector) committees;
  6. The development of teaching and research in urban forestry as part of the work of the Chair on the Urban Tree and its Environment 2020-2025;
  7. Develop synergy with the Geography and Geomatics Departments of the Faculty of Forestry, Geography and Geomatics, as well as with the Faculty of Science and Engineering Université Laval;
  8. Become a member of at least one recognized research center at Laval University, such as the Centre for Forest Research.
     
Selection criterias
  1. Possess a bachelor's degree in forestry or a related discipline and a doctoral degree from a recognized university, or be in the process of obtaining one;
  2. Possess specific skills in at least three of the listed fields;
  3. Have an applied knowledge of urban forestry issues in Quebec and elsewhere in the world;
  4. Demonstrate aptitude in academic teaching and knowledge mobilization;
  5. Demonstrate an ability to establish and maintain partnerships;
  6. Demonstrate the ability to secure funding for their research from public or private granting agencies;
  7. Demonstrate the ability to integrate into multidisciplinary teams;
  8. Present a vision for the position in terms of academic education and research and propose concrete actions to achieve it;
  9. Be able to communicate orally and in writing in French, or commit to doing so within one year;
     
Hiring and treatment

Salary according to the current collective agreement.
